Good condition antique German GEW 88 Commission bolt action rifle in 8mm Mauser caliber that was manufactured by Steyr in 1890, as marked on the receiver. Rifle is NOT import marked and NOT Turk marked, and has matching serial numbers on the receiver, barrel, barrel jacket, and triggerguard. This was a large-caliber version of the series that had included the Romanian and Dutch Mannlichers. It had a straight-grip stock, and a handguard ran from the receiver ring to the barrel band. The magazine case resembled that of the Gew.88, but the barrel jacket of the German gun was absent; a bayonet lug was on the right side of the nose cap. The WWI donation rifles from Germany ( Gew88/05, Gew 98 and Kar98a) all originally in 7,9mm, have (M88/05) a .980 Barrel, the Gew98/Kar98a has a 1.010 barrel shank (Large Shank), but both 12 TPI/55degree...The early 1920s Czech Vz98/22 is identical to the Gew98. As the offical date of this change was 1905, the Gew.88 rifles thus marked are known as Gew.88/05. 4) While the military was painfully facing up to the need for change, civilian gunmakers had long implemented their own solution - which was to change the barrel to suit the bullet!
