It was created as the 9th Division during World War I , but never deployed overseas. In later years, it would become an important unit of the U.S. Army during World War II and the Vietnam War . On July 10, 1969, Dong Tam Base, the 9th Infantry’s base camp in Dinh Tuong Province, RVN, was subjected to enemy rocket fire. At 1605 hours, Dong Tam received a single 107mm rocket which impacted less than 50 feet from the in/out processing center, resulting in two U.S. Army killed, and 18 U.S. Army and 3 U.S. Navy wounded.
